Ingredients

  • 1 cup cooked and mashed sweet potato plain – no added spices or sugars
  • 1/2 cup cooked and shredded chicken or lean ground turkey boiled or baked without any seasonings
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened apple sauce pure apple sauce with no xylitol or other artificial sweeteners
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/4 cup whole wheat flour or oat flour Oat flour is a great gluten-free alternative if your dog has sensitivities.
  • 1 tablespoon chia seeds

Equipment

  • Air Fryer
  • Medium Bowl
  • Wire rack

Method

  1. In a medium bowl, combine the mashed sweet potato, shredded chicken or turkey, unsweetened apple sauce, and egg. Mix thoroughly until all ingredients are well incorporated.
1 cup cooked and mashed sweet potato, 1/2 cup cooked and shredded chicken or lean ground turkey, 1/4 cup unsweetened apple sauce, 1 large egg
  2. Gradually add the whole wheat flour (or oat flour) and chia seeds to the wet mixture. Stir until a sticky dough forms. If the dough seems too wet, add a tiny bit more flour, one teaspoon at a time, until it's manageable.
1/4 cup whole wheat flour or oat flour, 1 tablespoon chia seeds
  3. Lightly dust your hands with flour. Pinch off small portions of the dough and roll them into bite-sized balls, about 1 inch in diameter. Gently flatten each ball into a small disc, about 1/2 inch thick.
  4. Arrange the treat discs in a single layer in your air fryer basket, ensuring they don't touch each other. You may need to cook in batches depending on the size of your air fryer.
  5. Air fry at 350°F (175°C) for 10-15 minutes, or until the treats are firm to the touch and no longer appear doughy. The exact time will depend on your air fryer and the thickness of your treats.
  6. Once cooked, remove the treats from the air fryer basket and transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely before serving or storing.

Notes

Introduce treats gradually. Consult veterinarian for dogs with allergies or health conditions.
