- Preheat and Prepare: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch round or square cake pan.
- Mix Dry Ingredients: In a medium bowl, combine flour, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Set aside.
- Cream Butter and Sugars: In a large bowl, beat the softened butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until light and fluffy.
- Add Wet Ingredients: Beat in eggs one at a time. Mix in applesauce and sour cream until well combined.
- Combine Mixtures: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, folding gently until just combined.
- Bake: Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and smooth the top. Bake for 35–40 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Cool and Serve: Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely. Dust with powdered sugar before serving, if desired.
