Ingredients

  • 1 bar of Fels-Naptha castile, or natural unscented soap (about 4.5 oz)
  • 1 cup washing soda
  • 1 cup borax
  • Optional 10-15 drops of essential oil (lavender, lemon, or your preferred scent)

Equipment

  • Cheese grater
  • Large mixing bowl
  • Airtight storage container (glass jar or plastic container)
  • measuring cups,
  • Wooden spoon for mixing

Method

  1. Grate the Soap: Use a cheese grater to finely grate the soap bar into small shavings.
  2. Mix the Dry Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, combine the grated soap with washing soda and borax. Stir well.
  3. Add Essential Oils (Optional): If you prefer a scented detergent, add 10-15 drops of essential oil and mix thoroughly.
  4. Store the Mixture: Transfer the finished soap into an airtight container to keep it dry and fresh.
  5. Usage Instructions: Use 1-2 tablespoons per load of laundry. Adjust as needed based on water hardness and load size.

Notes

If using in cold water, dissolve the soap in warm water first before adding to the washer.
Store in a dry place to prevent clumping.
For extra cleaning power, add ½ cup white vinegar to the rinse cycle.
