For the Apple Filling
  • 6 medium-sized apples apples a mix of sweet and tart varieties like Honeycrisp, Gala, Granny Smith, and Fuji works best), peeled, cored, and sliced into ½-inch thick pieces
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar adjust to taste based on apple sweetness
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour or cornstarch for thickening
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 0.5 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice optional, helps prevent browning and adds brightness
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter cut into small cubes
For the Crumble Topping
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 0.5 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 0.25 cup granulated sugar
  • 0.5 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 0.25 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 cup cold unsalted butter cut into small cubes
  • 0.5 cup rolled oats old-fashioned, not instant, for texture
  • 0.5 cup chopped nuts pecans or walnuts, optional, for extra crunch

Method
 

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly butter a 9-inch pie dish or an 8x8 inch baking dish.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, granulated sugar, flour or cornstarch, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice (if using). Toss gently until the apples are evenly coated. Pour this mixture into the prepared baking dish, spreading it out evenly. Dot the top of the apple mixture with the small cubes of butter.

  3. In a separate medium bowl, whisk together the flour, brown sugar, granulated sugar, cinnamon, and salt.

  4. Add the cold, cubed butter to the dry ingredients. Using a pastry blender, your fingertips, or two forks, cut the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs, with some pea-sized pieces of butter still visible.

  5. Stir in the rolled oats and chopped nuts (if using) into the crumble mixture. Mix just until combined.

  6. Sprinkle the crumble topping evenly over the apple filling in the baking dish. Ensure the entire surface of the apples is covered.
  7. Place the baking dish on a baking sheet (to catch any potential drips) and bake for 35-45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apple filling is bubbling around the edges and tender when pierced with a fork.
  8. Let the Baked Apple Crumble cool for at least 10-15 minutes before serving.

Notes
