Ingredients

  • 2 cups All-Purpose Flour or Whole Wheat Flour Unchanged
  • 1 cup Cooked Mashed Sweet Potato Cooked until soft and mashed thoroughly
  • ½ cup Fresh or Frozen Blueberries Lightly mashed or pulsed in a food processor
  • ½ cup Shredded Carrots Finely shredded
  • ¼ cup Unsweetened Applesauce Unchanged
  • 2 tablespoons Coconut Oil Melted until liquid
  • 1 large Egg Lightly beaten

Equipment

  • - Oven
  • - Baking Sheet
  • - Parchment Paper
  • Large mixing bowl
  • Whisk
  • Food Processor (optional for blueberries)
  • Wire rack

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the mashed sweet potato, lightly beaten egg, unsweetened applesauce, and melted coconut oil. Whisk until well combined and smooth.
1 cup Cooked Mashed Sweet Potato, 1 large Egg, ¼ cup Unsweetened Applesauce, 2 tablespoons Coconut Oil
  3. Gently fold in the mashed blueberries and shredded carrots into the wet ingredient mixture. Mix until evenly distributed.
½ cup Fresh or Frozen Blueberries, ½ cup Shredded Carrots
  4. Gradually add the flour to the wet ingredients, mixing until a cohesive dough forms. It should be slightly sticky but manageable. You may need to add a little more flour if it’s too wet, or a tablespoon of water if it’s too dry.
2 cups All-Purpose Flour or Whole Wheat Flour
  5. Lightly flour your hands and a clean surface. Take a small portion of the dough, roll it into a rope about ½ inch thick, and then twist it into a treat shape. Alternatively, you can simply roll out the dough to about ¼ inch thickness and cut into shapes using cookie cutters.
  6. Place the shaped treats onto the prepared baking sheet, ensuring there’s a little space between each one.
  7. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden and the treats are firm to the touch. They should be dry on the outside.
  8. Remove the baking sheet from the oven and let the Blueberry Carrot Twists for Dogs cool on the sheet for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely. This ensures they become crisp and prevents a soggy bottom.

Notes

These treats are best stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-5 days, or frozen for 2-3 months. Always consult your veterinarian before introducing new foods to your dog's diet.
