Ingredients

  • 1 cup mashed cooked pumpkin (Ensure it's plain, unsweetened pumpkin puree, not pie filling)
  • 1/2 cup mashed cooked carrots (Boiled or steamed until soft, then mashed)
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce (Ensure no artificial sweeteners or xylitol are present)
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/4 cup oat flour (You can easily make this by grinding rolled oats in a blender or food processor)
  • 1/4 cup whole wheat flour (Alternatively, you can use more oat flour or a gluten-free blend if your dog has sensitivities)

Equipment

  • - Oven
  • - Baking Sheet
  • Parchment paper (optional)
  • Medium Mixing Bowl
  • Blender or Food Processor (for oat flour)

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease a baking sheet or line it with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium mixing bowl, thoroughly combine the mashed cooked pumpkin, mashed cooked carrots, unsweetened applesauce, and the egg. Mix until smooth and well-incorporated.
1 cup mashed cooked pumpkin, 1/2 cup mashed cooked carrots, 1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce, 1 large egg
  3. Gradually add the oat flour and whole wheat flour to the wet ingredients. Stir until a thick dough forms. You may need to use your hands to bring it all together.
1/4 cup oat flour, 1/4 cup whole wheat flour
  4. Take small portions of the dough and roll them into bite-sized chews. You can shape them into little logs, flattened discs, or even small balls. Aim for a consistent size for even baking.
  5. Place the shaped chews onto the prepared baking sheet. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the chews are firm to the touch and slightly browned around the edges.
  6. Remove the baking sheet from the oven and let the chews cool completely on the sheet before offering them to your dog. This ensures they are safe to eat and have reached their final texture.
