Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup rolled oats old-fashioned oats recommended for best texture
  • 1 cup milk dairy or non-dairy like almond, soy, or oat milk
  • 1 ripe banana mashed
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tablespoon chia seeds
  • 1-2 teaspoons sweetener maple syrup, honey, or agave nectar, to taste
  • Pinch salt
Optional toppings
  • fresh banana slices
  • cocoa nibs
  • chopped nuts
  • shredded coconut
  • dollop of yogurt

Equipment

  • Medium-sized jar, container, or bowl

Method

  1. In a medium-sized jar, container, or bowl, add the rolled oats, unsweetened cocoa powder, chia seeds, and a pinch of salt. Stir them together thoroughly to ensure the cocoa powder is evenly distributed and there are no clumps. This initial mix helps prevent the cocoa from clumping later.

  2. Pour in the milk of your choice. Add the mashed ripe banana, which will provide natural sweetness and a creamy texture. If you prefer a sweeter breakfast, add your chosen sweetener (maple syrup, honey, or agave nectar) now, adjusting the amount to your liking.
1 cup milk, 1 ripe banana, 1-2 teaspoons sweetener
  3. Stir all the ingredients together until everything is well combined. Ensure the oats, chia seeds, and cocoa are fully submerged in the liquid. The mixture will look quite liquidy at this stage, but the chia seeds will help thicken it as it sits.
  4. Cover the container tightly with a lid or plastic wrap. Place it in the refrigerator and let it chill for at least 4 hours, or preferably overnight. This crucial step allows the oats to absorb the liquid, soften, and the chia seeds to gel, creating that signature thick, creamy texture.
  5. In the morning, give the cocoa banana overnight oats a good stir. If the mixture is too thick for your liking, you can add a splash more milk to reach your desired consistency. Spoon the oats into a bowl and garnish with your favorite toppings. Fresh banana slices, a sprinkle of cocoa nibs, a scattering of chopped nuts, or a dollop of yogurt are all fantastic choices.
