Instructions
- In a medium saucepan, combine the water, orange zest, whole cloves, cinnamon stick, and star anise pods.
- Bring the mixture to a gentle boil over medium-high heat, then immediately reduce the heat to low and simmer for 10 minutes to allow the spices to fully infuse the water.
- Remove the saucepan from the heat. Carefully add the black tea bags to the spiced water.
- Cover the saucepan and steep the tea for 3 to 5 minutes, depending on desired strength. Do not over-steep to avoid bitterness.
- Strain the tea through a fine-mesh sieve into mugs to remove all spices and zest. Discard the solids.
- Stir in the honey or maple syrup until fully dissolved. Garnish each mug with a fresh orange slice or a dash of cinnamon, and serve immediately.
Notes
For an extra layer of flavor, use the peel from a naval or blood orange. If you prefer a richer color, use 3 tea bags instead of 2. This tea keeps well in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and can be gently reheated.
