Instructions
- If using meat: Brown the ground beef or turkey in a skillet over medium heat. Drain off any excess fat. Return the meat to the skillet, add the dry taco seasoning mix and 1/4 cup of water. Stir well and simmer for 5 minutes until the liquid has reduced slightly and the meat is fully coated. Set aside.
- In a medium mixing bowl, combine the softened cream cheese, sour cream, and the entire package of taco seasoning mix. Mix thoroughly with a hand mixer or sturdy spoon until the mixture is completely smooth and creamy.
- Spread the cream cheese mixture evenly into the bottom of a 9x13 inch serving dish or a similar size shallow platter. This forms the first layer.
- If using meat, spoon the prepared seasoned meat evenly over the cream cheese layer. If omitting meat, proceed to the next layer.
- Layer the remaining toppings over the meat (or cream cheese layer). Sprinkle evenly with shredded cheddar cheese, then layer on the salsa, sliced black olives, diced tomatoes, and finally garnish with sliced green onions and fresh cilantro.
- Chill the completed taco dip in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes before serving to allow the flavors to meld and the dip to firm up slightly. Serve cold with tortilla chips, Fritos, or vegetable sticks.
Notes
For an extra layer of flavor, blend half of the cream cheese mixture with 1/2 cup of refried beans before spreading it as the first layer. Make sure the cream cheese is very soft for easy blending.
