Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup rolled oats (old-fashioned oats recommended for best texture)
  • 1 cup milk (dairy or non-dairy of your choice, such as almond, soy, or oat milk)
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar (packed, adjust to your sweetness preference)
  • 1 teaspoon chia seeds
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch salt

Equipment

  • Jar, bowl, or airtight container

Method

  1. In a jar, bowl, or airtight container, add the 1/2 cup of rolled oats. Next, stir in the 1 tablespoon of packed brown sugar, 1 teaspoon of chia seeds, and a pinch of salt. Ensure everything is well combined to distribute the sweetness evenly.
1/2 cup rolled oats, 1 tablespoon brown sugar, 1 teaspoon chia seeds, Pinch salt
  2. Pour in 1 cup of your milk of choice, whether it's whole milk for extra richness, skim for a lighter option, or a creamy non-dairy alternative like almond or oat milk. Add the 1/4 teaspoon of vanilla extract for an extra layer of warm flavor.
1 cup milk, 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
  3. Stir all the ingredients together until everything is thoroughly combined. Make sure there are no dry pockets of oats or clumps of brown sugar. The chia seeds will also start to absorb some of the liquid.
  4. Cover the container tightly with a lid or plastic wrap. Place the mixture in the refrigerator for at least 4 hours, but ideally overnight (6-8 hours). This allows the oats and chia seeds to absorb the liquid, creating a wonderfully thick and creamy texture.
  5. In the morning, give your Creamy Brown Sugar Overnight Oats a good stir. If the oats are too thick for your liking, you can add a splash more milk to reach your desired consistency. Top with your favorite additions like fresh fruit, nuts, granola, or a dollop of yogurt.

Notes

Store in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days. Can be gently reheated in the microwave or on the stovetop if preferred warm.
