Ingredients

  • 1 cup Whole Wheat Flour Provides carbohydrates for energy and acts as the base for our crunchy treats.
  • 1/2 cup Rolled Oats (uncooked) Adds fiber for digestive health and a satisfying texture.
  • 1/4 cup Fresh or Frozen Blueberries (mashed) Rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals, blueberries are a superfood for dogs.
  • 1 large Egg Acts as a binder, helping to hold the treats together and providing protein.
  • 2 tablespoons Unsweetened Applesauce Adds a touch of moisture and natural sweetness, also providing fiber.
  • 2 tablespoons Water (or unsweetened almond milk) Helps achieve the right dough consistency for easy handling.

Equipment

  • - Oven
  • - Baking Sheet
  • - Parchment Paper
  • Medium Mixing Bowl
  • Small Bowl
  • Whisk
  • Rolling Pin
  • Cookie Cutter (optional)
  • Wire rack

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease it to prevent sticking.
  2. In a medium mixing bowl, combine the whole wheat flour and rolled oats. Stir them together until well mixed.
1 cup Whole Wheat Flour, 1/2 cup Rolled Oats (uncooked)
  3. In a separate small bowl, whisk together the mashed blueberries, egg, and unsweetened applesauce until smooth.
1/4 cup Fresh or Frozen Blueberries (mashed), 1 large Egg, 2 tablespoons Unsweetened Applesauce
  4. Pour the wet ingredients into the bowl with the dry ingredients. Add the water (or unsweetened almond milk) and begin to mix until a stiff dough forms. You might need to add a tiny bit more water if the dough is too dry, or a sprinkle more flour if it’s too sticky.
2 tablespoons Water (or unsweetened almond milk)
  5. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Knead gently for about 1-2 minutes until it’s just combined. Roll the dough out to about ¼ inch thickness.
  6. Use a cookie cutter (dog bone shapes are fun!) or a knife to cut out your desired treat shapes. Place the cut treats onto the prepared baking sheet, leaving a little space between each one.
  7. Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden brown and the treats are firm to the touch. The exact baking time will depend on the thickness of your treats.
  8. Remove the baking sheet from the oven and let the treats cool on the sheet for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely. This is crucial for achieving that satisfying crunch.
