Ingredients

  • 2 cups Whole Wheat Flour Provides carbohydrates for energy and some dietary fiber.
  • 1 cup Shredded Cheddar Cheese A good source of protein and calcium, making these treats irresistible. Ensure it's plain cheddar without any added flavorings like onion or garlic powder.
  • 1/2 cup Unsweetened Applesauce Adds moisture and a touch of natural sweetness, contributing to fiber intake for digestive health.
  • 1/4 cup Water To help bind the ingredients together and achieve the right dough consistency.
  • 1 Egg Acts as a binder and adds protein and essential nutrients.

Equipment

  • - Oven
  • - Baking Sheet
  • - Parchment Paper
  • Large mixing bowl
  • Rolling Pin
  • Cookie cutters
  • Wire rack

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease it.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the whole wheat flour and shredded cheddar cheese.
2 cups Whole Wheat Flour, 1 cup Shredded Cheddar Cheese
  3. Add the unsweetened applesauce and the egg to the dry ingredients.
1/2 cup Unsweetened Applesauce, 1 Egg
  4. Gradually add the water, about a tablespoon at a time, mixing until a firm dough forms. You may not need all the water, or you might need a touch more, depending on your flour and humidity. The dough should be firm enough to handle but not sticky.
    1/4 cup Water
  5. Lightly flour a clean surface and your rolling pin. Roll out the dough to about 1/2 inch thickness. Use your favorite cookie cutters (dog bones, stars, or simple circles are great!) to cut out the treats.
  6. Place the cut-out treats onto the prepared baking sheet, leaving a little space between them. Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden brown and the treats are firm to the touch.
  7. Remove from the oven and let the treats cool completely on a wire rack before serving. This is crucial for texture and safety.

Notes

Store completely cooled treats in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week. For longer storage, freeze for up to 2-3 months. Thaw in the refrigerator overnight or at room temperature for a few hours. Can be gently warmed in the microwave for a few seconds, but ensure they cool completely before serving.
