Ingredients

  • 2 cups Whole Wheat Flour
  • 1/2 cup Unsweetened Applesauce
  • 1/4 cup Peanut Butter (xylitol-free ONLY) **Crucially, ensure it contains NO xylitol, which is highly toxic to dogs.**
  • 1/4 cup Water or more as needed
  • 1 teaspoon Baking Powder
Optional (for "frosting")
  • Plain, unsweetened yogurt for a dog-safe topping
  • Mashed sweet potato for a dog-safe topping

Equipment

  • Donut-shaped baking pan
  • - Baking Sheet
  • Large mixing bowl
  • Small Bowl
  • Whisk
  • Rolling Pin
  • Cookie Cutter
  • Wire rack

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease a donut-shaped baking pan or a standard baking sheet. If using a baking sheet, you can gently spoon batter into donut shapes or use a cookie cutter after baking and cooling.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the whole wheat flour and baking powder until well combined.
2 cups Whole Wheat Flour, 1 teaspoon Baking Powder
  3. In a separate bowl, beat the egg until lightly fluffy. Add the xylitol-free peanut butter and unsweetened applesauce to the beaten egg and mix until smooth and creamy.
1/4 cup Peanut Butter (xylitol-free ONLY), 1/2 cup Unsweetened Applesauce
  4. Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing until a cohesive dough begins to form. Add water, one tablespoon at a time, until the dough is no longer sticky but is still pliable and easy to handle. You're aiming for a texture similar to playdough.
    1/4 cup Water
  5. Lightly flour a clean surface and your rolling pin. Roll out the dough to about 1/4 to 1/2 inch thickness. Use a donut-shaped cookie cutter to cut out your donuts. If you don't have a donut cutter, you can use a round cookie cutter and then a smaller round cutter for the hole, or simply spoon dollops of dough onto your baking sheet.
  6. Carefully place the cut-out donuts onto your prepared baking pan. Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until the donuts are firm to the touch and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. The edges should be lightly golden brown.
  7. Remove the donuts from the oven and let them cool in the pan for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely. This is crucial before adding any "frosting."
  8. Once the donuts are completely cool, you can "frost" them with a dollop of plain, unsweetened yogurt or a smear of mashed sweet potato. Store any frosted donuts in the refrigerator.

Notes

Store unfrosted donuts in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-5 days. Frosted donuts should be consumed within 2-3 days. For longer storage, freeze completely cooled donuts for up to 2-3 months.
