- Brew a fresh cup of coffee or make a shot or two of espresso. Aim for about 1 cup (8 ounces). Set aside to cool slightly.1 cup brewed coffee or espresso
- Pour 1 cup of milk into a small saucepan. Heat over medium heat until steaming but not boiling. Alternatively, warm in the microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring in between, until hot.1 cup milk
- In your serving mug or a small bowl, combine the unsweetened cocoa powder and your chosen sugar or sweetener. Add 1-2 tablespoons of the warm milk and stir vigorously until a smooth, thick chocolate paste forms.1-2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder, 1-2 teaspoons sugar or sweetener, 1 cup milk
- Pour the rest of the warm milk into the mug with the chocolate paste. Add the vanilla extract. Stir until the chocolate paste is fully incorporated into the milk, creating a smooth, chocolaty mixture.1 cup milk, 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Pour your brewed coffee (or espresso) into the milk and chocolate mixture. Stir gently to combine all the ingredients thoroughly.1 cup brewed coffee or espresso
- Taste your mocha. If not sweet enough, add more sugar. If a stronger chocolate flavor is desired, stir in an additional teaspoon of cocoa powder dissolved in a tiny bit of hot water or milk first.1-2 teaspoons sugar or sweetener, 1-2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder

Best enjoyed fresh. Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 2 days and reheated gently.
