Ingredients

  • 1 pint Vanilla Ice Cream high-quality is recommended for best flavor and texture
  • 1/4 cup Milk whole milk or half-and-half for extra richness
  • 1/2 teaspoon Vanilla Extract
  • Food Coloring various colors like red, blue, green, yellow, and pink
  • 5 count Sugar Cones or Waffle Cones
Optional Toppings
  • Sprinkles
  • chocolate chips
  • chopped nuts
  • maraschino cherries
  • whipped cream

Equipment

  • Mixing bowls
  • Whisk or spatula
  • Small bowls (5)
  • Spoons
  • Ice cream scoop

Method

  1. Place the pint of vanilla ice cream in a large, chilled mixing bowl. Allow it to sit at room temperature for about 5-10 minutes, or until it's softened enough to stir easily but not melted. This will make it easier to incorporate the milk and colors evenly.
    1 pint Vanilla Ice Cream
  2. Add the milk and vanilla extract to the softened ice cream. Using a whisk or a sturdy spatula, stir the mixture until it's smooth and creamy, resembling a thick milkshake. Ensure there are no icy chunks remaining.
1 pint Vanilla Ice Cream, 1/4 cup Milk, 1/2 teaspoon Vanilla Extract
  3. Carefully divide the ice cream mixture equally among five small bowls. Aim for roughly the same amount in each bowl. This is where the magic of color begins!
  4. To each of the five bowls, add a few drops of a different food coloring. Start with 2-3 drops and stir thoroughly with a clean spoon or a small whisk until the color is evenly distributed and vibrant. Add more drops if you desire a deeper hue. For instance, in one bowl, add red; in another, blue; in a third, green; in a fourth, yellow; and in the fifth, pink.

  5. Have your five sugar cones or waffle cones ready for filling. If you're using toppings, get them in small dishes for easy access.

  6. For an extra layered effect, you can lightly swirl two colors into one cone before filling it completely. However, for distinct colors as per the "Five Colorful Ice Cream Cones" theme, focus on single colors per cone.
  7. Using an ice cream scoop or a spoon, carefully spoon the colored ice cream into each cone. Fill them generously, making sure to pack it in slightly to prevent gaps. You can create a slightly rounded top for that classic ice cream parlor look.
  8. Immediately after filling, add your desired toppings. Go wild with sprinkles, chocolate chips, or a dollop of whipped cream and a cherry on top! Work quickly, as the ice cream will begin to soften in the warmer air.
