Ingredients

  • 1 pound fresh strawberries washed and thoroughly dried
  • 12 ounces semi-sweet chocolate chips or milk chocolate, dark chocolate, or white chocolate for variety
  • 1 tablespoon coconut oil or shortening optional, for smoother melting and glossier finish
  • 2 ounces white chocolate chips for decorating laces
  • Piping bag with a thin round tip, or a Ziploc bag with a tiny corner snipped off

Equipment

  • Microwave-safe bowl
  • - Baking Sheet
  • - Parchment Paper
  • Piping bag
  • Ziploc bag

Method

  1. Start by washing your strawberries thoroughly under cool running water. It's crucial to dry them completely using paper towels. Any excess moisture will prevent the chocolate from adhering properly, leading to a less-than-perfect coating. Gently remove the green stems (or "leaves") from each strawberry.

  2. In a microwave-safe bowl, combine the semi-sweet chocolate chips and the coconut oil or shortening (if using). Microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring well after each interval, until the chocolate is mostly melted. Stir until it's completely smooth and glossy. Alternatively, you can melt the chocolate using a double boiler over simmering water, stirring constantly until smooth.

  3. Hold each strawberry by the stem end (or the part where the stem was removed) and dip it into the melted chocolate, rotating it to ensure it's evenly coated. Allow any excess chocolate to drip back into the bowl. Place the chocolate-covered strawberry onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or wax paper. Repeat this process with all the strawberries.

  4. Once all the strawberries are dipped, place the baking sheet in the refrigerator for about 15-20 minutes, or until the chocolate has hardened completely. This ensures a firm base for your football laces.
  5. While the strawberries are chilling, melt the white chocolate chips in a separate microwave-safe bowl (using the same method as for the semi-sweet chocolate). Transfer the melted white chocolate into a piping bag fitted with a very thin round tip, or into a small Ziploc bag with a tiny corner snipped off.

  6. Once the semi-sweet chocolate coating is firm, take each strawberry and pipe thin lines of white chocolate across the top to resemble football laces. Aim for simple, parallel lines. Don't worry if your lines aren't perfectly straight; a slightly rustic look adds to the charm!

  7. Return the decorated strawberries to the refrigerator for another 10-15 minutes to allow the white chocolate laces to set completely.

Notes

Keep refrigerated and best enjoyed fresh within 2-3 days. Freezing and reheating are not recommended.
