Ingredients

  • cups chocolate sandwich cookies (like Oreos) finely crushed into crumbs
  • 3.4-ounce package instant chocolate pudding mix
  • cups cold milk
  • teaspoon vanilla extract
  • cup whipped topping approximately, your favorite, store-bought or homemade, mixed with a few drops of green food coloring until desired shade is achieved
  • white frosting (from a tube with a fine tip or a piping bag with a small round tip)
  • Small football-shaped candies or edible glitter optional, for extra flair

Equipment

  • Food Processor
  • Medium Bowl
  • Serving cups
  • Piping bag or tube with fine tip

Method

  1. Begin by placing the chocolate sandwich cookies into a food processor and pulsing until they are finely crushed into crumbs. Alternatively, you can place the cookies in a resealable plastic bag and crush them with a rolling pin. Measure out 1 ½ cups of these cookie crumbs and set aside.

  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the instant chocolate pudding mix and the cold milk. Continue whisking for about 2 minutes, or until the pudding begins to thicken. Stir in the vanilla extract. Let the pudding stand for 5 minutes to allow it to set fully.

  3. Grab your serving cups (clear plastic cups, small mason jars, or even small terracotta pots work wonderfully!). Begin by spooning a layer of the crushed chocolate cookie crumbs into the bottom of each cup. Aim for a layer that’s about ½ inch thick, representing the "dirt."

  4. Carefully spoon or pipe a generous layer of the prepared chocolate pudding over the cookie crumb base in each cup. This forms the rich, "muddy" layer.

  5. If using, gently dollop or pipe the green-tinted whipped topping over the chocolate pudding layer. You can spread it slightly to create a grassy effect. If you don’t have green whipped topping, you can skip this step and add a bit more cookie crumbs on top for a purely dirt-themed cup.

  6. Using your white frosting, carefully pipe lines onto the green "grass" to resemble a football field. You can create yard lines and a midfield stripe. For a simpler approach, just draw a few white lines randomly.

  7. If you have football candies, place a few on top of the "field" for an extra touch. Edible glitter can also add a festive sparkle.

  8. Once decorated, place the Football Dirt Cups in the refrigerator for at least 15-30 minutes before serving. This allows the pudding to firm up further and the flavors to meld.

Notes

Store assembled, undecorated cups in an airtight container or tightly covered with plastic wrap in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. If already decorated with whipped topping and frosting, they are best consumed within 24 hours as the whipped topping can soften and the frosting can become slightly sticky over time.
It is not recommended to freeze these Football Dirt Cups, as the texture of the pudding and whipped topping can change significantly upon thawing, making them watery or grainy.
