Ingredients

  • 2 cups shredded unsweetened apples (about 2 medium apples, with peel removed and cored)
  • 1 cup finely grated carrots (about 2 medium carrots)
  • 1 cup whole wheat flour (or gluten-free oat flour for sensitive tummies)
  • ½ cup rolled oats (uncooked)
  • ¼ cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened, unsalted peanut butter ensure it contains *no xylitol*
  • 1 large egg

Equipment

  • - Oven
  • - Baking Sheet
  • - Parchment Paper
  • Large mixing bowl
  • Wire rack

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 325°F (160°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the shredded apples, grated carrots, unsweetened applesauce, peanut butter, and egg. Stir well until all ingredients are thoroughly mixed.
2 cups shredded unsweetened apples, 1 cup finely grated carrots, ¼ cup unsweetened applesauce, 2 tablespoons unsweetened, unsalted peanut butter, 1 large egg
  3. Gradually add the whole wheat flour and rolled oats to the wet mixture. Stir until a thick, cohesive dough forms. If the dough is too sticky, add a tablespoon of flour at a time until it's manageable.
1 cup whole wheat flour, ½ cup rolled oats
  4. Lightly flour your hands or a clean surface. Take small portions of dough (about a tablespoon) and roll them into logs, about ½ inch thick and 4-6 inches long, resembling chew sticks. Place them on the prepared baking sheet, leaving a little space between each one.
  5. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-35 minutes, or until the chew sticks are firm to the touch and slightly golden on the edges. The exact time will depend on the thickness of your sticks.
  6. Remove the baking sheet from the oven and let the chew sticks cool on the sheet for about 10 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely. Ensure they are entirely cool before offering them to your dog.

Notes

Store cooled chew sticks in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5-7 days. For longer storage, freeze for up to 2-3 months.
Adjust feeding based on dog's size, activity level, and overall diet. Consult vet for personalized recommendations.
