Ingredients

  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1/2 cup rolled oats
  • 1/4 cup cooked, crumbled bacon (no added salt or seasonings) Ensure bacon is fully cooked and cooled before crumbling.
  • 1/4 cup shredded cheddar cheese (low-fat, plain) Use plain cheddar without any added flavorings or spices.
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tablespoons water

Equipment

  • - Oven
  • - Baking Sheet
  • - Parchment Paper
  • Medium Bowl
  • Wire rack
  • Cookie Cutter (optional)

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the whole wheat flour and rolled oats until well combined.
1 cup whole wheat flour, 1/2 cup rolled oats
  3. Add the crumbled bacon, shredded cheddar cheese, and egg to the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.
1/4 cup cooked, crumbled bacon (no added salt or seasonings), 1/4 cup shredded cheddar cheese (low-fat, plain), 1 large egg
  4. Gradually add the water, one tablespoon at a time, and mix until a firm dough forms. It should be pliable but not sticky.
    2 tablespoons water
  5. On a lightly floured surface, roll out the dough to about 1/4-inch thickness. Use a cookie cutter (bone-shaped, paws, or circles are fun!) to cut out your desired shapes. Alternatively, you can simply roll small pieces into balls or cut them into small squares.
  6. Place the shaped treats onto the prepared baking sheet, leaving a little space between each one. Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden brown and the treats are firm to the touch.
  7. Remove the baking sheet from the oven and let the treats cool completely on a wire rack before serving or storing. This ensures they become fully crisp and easy to break.

Notes

Store cooled treats in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 7 days. For longer storage, freeze for up to 3 months. Thaw frozen treats overnight. Gently warm if desired.
Feed 1-4 treats per day depending on dog size.
