Ingredients

  • 1 cup cooked and mashed sweet potato
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened pumpkin puree
  • 1 large egg lightly beaten
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour or oat flour (for grain-free option)
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce Ensure it's pure applesauce with no xylitol.
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon dog-safe amount
  • 1 tablespoon dog-safe peanut butter xylitol-free, optional

Equipment

  • - Baking Sheet
  • - Parchment Paper
  • Medium Bowl
  • Wire rack

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking.
  2. In a medium bowl, thoroughly combine the mashed sweet potato, unsweetened pumpkin puree, beaten egg, and unsweetened applesauce. Mix until smooth and well incorporated.
1 cup cooked and mashed sweet potato, 1/2 cup unsweetened pumpkin puree, 1 large egg, 1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce
  3. Gradually add the flour (or oat flour) and cinnamon to the wet ingredients. If using, stir in the dog-safe peanut butter.
1/2 cup all-purpose flour or oat flour (for grain-free option), 1 teaspoon cinnamon, 1 tablespoon dog-safe peanut butter
  4. Mix everything together until a soft dough forms. Be careful not to overmix, as this can make the treats tough.
  5. Drop rounded spoonfuls of the dough onto the prepared baking sheet, spacing them about an inch apart. You can gently flatten them with the back of the spoon. For festive shapes, you can lightly press them with a cookie cutter (ensure it’s clean and food-safe).
  6. Bake for 15–20 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden brown and the treats feel firm to the touch.
  7. Remove from the oven and let the treats cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely. This is crucial to prevent breakage and ensure they are safe to store.

Notes

These Christmas Critter Bites are intended as a supplemental treat, not a main meal. Store cooled treats in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5-7 days, or freeze for up to 2-3 months.
