Method
- Preheat your waffle iron according to the manufacturer's instructions. Lightly grease the waffle iron with a touch of dog-safe oil (like coconut oil or olive oil) to prevent sticking.
- In a medium-sized mixing bowl, whisk together the whole wheat flour, rolled oats, and baking powder until well combined.1 cup Whole Wheat Flour, 1/2 cup Rolled Oats, 1/2 teaspoon Baking Powder
- In a separate bowl, gently whisk the egg, then stir in the unsweetened applesauce, plain yogurt, and xylitol-free peanut butter until smooth.1 Large Egg, 1/4 cup Unsweetened Applesauce, 1/4 cup Plain Yogurt (unsweetened, unflavored), 1 tablespoon Peanut Butter (xylitol-free, unsalted)
- Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, stirring until just combined. Slowly add the water (or almond milk) a tablespoon at a time, mixing until you achieve a thick but pourable waffle batter. Be careful not to overmix; a few lumps are perfectly fine.1/2 cup Water (or unsweetened, unflavored almond milk)
- Pour about 1/4 to 1/3 cup of batter onto the preheated waffle iron, depending on the size of your iron. Close the lid and cook for approximately 4-7 minutes, or until the waffle is golden brown and cooked through. You’ll notice steam production decreasing from the waffle iron, which is a good indicator they are ready.
- Carefully remove the cooked waffle from the waffle iron. Place it on a wire rack to cool completely before serving it to your dog. This prevents any steam from making the waffle soggy and ensures it's safe to eat. You can break it into smaller pieces for easier handling and digestion.
