Equipment

  • Waffle iron
  • Mixing bowls
  • Whisk
  • Wire rack

Method

  1. Preheat your waffle iron to a medium setting. Lightly grease it with a little coconut oil or dog-safe cooking spray to prevent sticking.
    1 tablespoon coconut oil
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the rolled oats and whole wheat flour. If using, add the pinch of cinnamon.
1 cup rolled oats, 1/2 cup whole wheat flour, 1 pinch cinnamon
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk the egg, then stir in the unsweetened pumpkin puree, unsweetened applesauce, plain yogurt, and melted coconut oil until well combined.
1 large egg, 1/2 cup unsweetened pumpkin puree, 1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce, 1/4 cup plain, unsweetened yogurt, 1 tablespoon coconut oil
  4. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. Be careful not to overmix; a few lumps are perfectly fine. The batter should be thick but pourable.
  5. Ladle about 1/4 cup of batter onto your preheated waffle iron, spreading it evenly. Close the lid and cook for 5-7 minutes, or until golden brown and cooked through. The waffles should feel firm to the touch.
  6. Carefully remove the waffles from the iron and let them cool completely on a wire rack before serving. This is crucial to prevent burning your dog's mouth. Once cooled, you can serve them whole or break them into smaller, bite-sized pieces.
