Ingredients

  • 1 cup Rolled Oats (old-fashioned) Provides complex carbohydrates for sustained energy and a good source of soluble fiber, aiding digestion.
  • 1/2 cup Unsweetened Applesauce (plain) Adds natural sweetness and moisture. Applesauce is a good source of vitamins and fiber, promoting a healthy gut.
  • 1/4 cup Cooked and Mashed Sweet Potato Rich in beta-carotene (which converts to Vitamin A) for vision and immune health, as well as Vitamin C and fiber for digestive support.
  • 1/4 cup Plain, Non-Fat Greek Yogurt A source of probiotics for gut health, aiding in digestion and nutrient absorption, and a good source of protein.
  • 1 tablespoon Flaxseed Meal (ground) Offers omega-3 fatty acids, which are beneficial for skin and coat health, and contributes to fiber intake for digestive regularity.
  • 1/4 cup Finely Chopped Cooked Lean Chicken Breast (or Turkey Breast) A fantastic source of lean protein for muscle development and repair, essential for overall canine vitality. Ensure it's plain cooked without any added spices or oils.

Equipment

  • - Baking Sheet
  • - Parchment Paper
  • Mixing bowl
  • Cookie cutters
  • Wire rack

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking.
  2. In a medium mixing bowl, combine the unsweetened applesauce, plain non-fat Greek yogurt, and cooked and mashed sweet potato. Stir until well blended.
1/2 cup Unsweetened Applesauce (plain), 1/4 cup Plain, Non-Fat Greek Yogurt, 1/4 cup Cooked and Mashed Sweet Potato
  3. Add the rolled oats, ground flaxseed meal, and finely chopped cooked lean chicken breast (or turkey breast) to the wet ingredients.
1 cup Rolled Oats (old-fashioned), 1 tablespoon Flaxseed Meal (ground), 1/4 cup Finely Chopped Cooked Lean Chicken Breast (or Turkey Breast)
  4. Stir everything together until a thick, cohesive dough forms. It should be slightly sticky but manageable. If it seems too wet, add a tablespoon of oats at a time. If too dry, add a teaspoon of water or unsweetened applesauce.
1 cup Rolled Oats (old-fashioned), 1/2 cup Unsweetened Applesauce (plain)
  5. Roll the dough out on a lightly floured surface (using oat flour or a small amount of extra rolled oats) to about 1/4 inch thickness. Use your favorite small cookie cutters to shape the treats, or simply roll small portions into bite-sized balls and flatten them slightly.
  6. Place the shaped treats onto the prepared baking sheet, leaving a little space between them. Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden brown and the treats are firm to the touch. For a crispier treat, you can turn off the oven after 15 minutes and leave them inside with the door ajar to cool completely.
  7. Let the Homemade Low Fat Dog Treats cool completely on a wire rack before serving them to your dog.
