Ingredients

  • 1 cup cooked and mashed sweet potato This vibrant vegetable is packed with beta-carotene, which converts to vitamin A in your dog's body, supporting vision and immune function. It also provides excellent dietary fiber, aiding in healthy digestion.
  • 1 cup whole wheat flour This provides the structure for our treats. Whole wheat flour offers some fiber.
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce Applesauce adds moisture and a touch of natural sweetness without any added sugars. It also contributes a bit of fiber and vitamins.
  • 1 tablespoon unsweetened peanut butter A fantastic source of protein and healthy fats, peanut butter also makes these treats irresistible. Ensure it does NOT contain xylitol, which is toxic to dogs.
  • 1 large egg Eggs are a complete protein source, providing essential amino acids and supporting muscle development. They also act as a binder to hold our treats together.
  • Oat flour (for a grain-free option)

Equipment

  • - Baking Sheet
  • - Parchment Paper
  • Medium Bowl
  • Spoon or spatula
  • Wire rack

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper for easy cleanup.
  2. In a medium bowl, thoroughly mash the cooked sweet potato until smooth. Add the whole wheat flour (or oat flour), unsweetened applesauce, unsweetened peanut butter, and the egg.
1 cup cooked and mashed sweet potato, 1 cup whole wheat flour, 1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce, 1 tablespoon unsweetened peanut butter, 1 large egg, Oat flour
  3. Stir all ingredients together with a spoon or spatula until a cohesive dough forms. The dough should be slightly sticky but manageable.
  4. Lightly flour your hands or a clean surface. Take small portions of dough (about 1 tablespoon for small treats, or larger for bigger dogs) and roll them into balls, then flatten them slightly into disc shapes. Alternatively, you can roll the dough out to about 1/2 inch thickness and use cookie cutters to create fun shapes.
  5. Place the shaped treats onto the prepared baking sheet, ensuring they have a little space between them. Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until the edges are golden brown and the treats are firm to the touch.
  6. Remove the baking sheet from the oven and let the treats cool on the sheet for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely. This is crucial to prevent any steam from making them soggy.

Notes

Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5-7 days, or freeze for up to 3 months. Gently reheat in a low oven if desired. Consult your veterinarian before introducing new foods to your dog's diet.
