- Gather your clean jars. Mason jars are perfect for this Ice Cream in a Jar recipe, but any sturdy, sealable glass or plastic container will work. Ensure they are completely dry. If you plan on serving individual portions, you can use smaller jars.
- In a large mixing bowl, pour in the heavy whipping cream. Using an electric mixer (or a whisk and some serious arm power!), whip the cream on medium-high speed until stiff peaks form. This means when you lift the whisk, the cream holds its shape and the peaks stand straight up without falling over. Be careful not to over-whip, as this can turn the cream into butter.2 cups heavy whipping cream
- Once you have stiff peaks, gradually pour in the sweetened condensed milk while continuing to mix on low speed until just combined. Stir in the vanilla extract. This base is incredibly rich and sweet, forming the foundation of your Ice Cream in a Jar.1 14 ounce can sweetened condensed milk, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- If you're adding any delicious extras like chocolate chips, cookie crumbles, or chopped fruit, gently fold them into the mixture at this stage using a spatula. Be mindful not to overmix, as you want the ingredients to be evenly distributed but not broken down.1/2 cup total chocolate chips, cookie crumbles, fruit pieces, caramel sauce, sprinkles
- Spoon the ice cream mixture into your prepared jar(s). If you're using multiple smaller jars, divide the mixture evenly. If you've opted for a single large jar, fill it up. If you want to create layers of flavor (e.g., vanilla, then chocolate syrup, then more ice cream), you can do so now. Place the lid securely on the jar(s).
- Place the sealed jar(s) in the freezer. Allow the Ice Cream in a Jar to freeze for at least 6-8 hours, or until firm. For the best texture, check on it after the initial 6 hours to ensure it's solid.
Notes
Leftover Ice Cream in a Jar will remain fresh and delicious for up to 2-3 weeks if the lid is tightly sealed and it's kept in the freezer. If it becomes too hard, let it sit at room temperature for 5-10 minutes before serving.
