Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup strong brewed coffee or espresso, chilled
  • 1/2 cup milk (dairy or non-dairy, such as almond, oat, or soy)
  • 2 tablespoons mashed ripe banana
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar or to taste
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • pinch ground nutmeg optional
  • ice cubes
Topping
  • whipped cream Optional
  • sprinkle of cinnamon Optional
  • thin slice fresh banana Optional garnish

Equipment

  • Small Bowl
  • Blender
  • Serving glass
  • Metal container
  • Ice Bath
  • Frother
  • Ice cube trays

Method

  1. In a small bowl or a blender cup, combine the mashed ripe banana, brown sugar, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, and nutmeg (if using). Whisk or blend until the ingredients are well incorporated and the sugar begins to dissolve into the banana. This creates the sweet and spiced base that mimics the flavors of banana bread.
2 tablespoons mashed ripe banana, 1 tablespoon brown sugar, 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract, 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon, pinch ground nutmeg
  2. While you prepare the banana base, ensure your coffee or espresso is brewed strongly and has been thoroughly chilled. This is crucial for an iced beverage to prevent it from becoming diluted and lukewarm. If you are short on time, you can brew your coffee and then quickly chill it by placing the brewed coffee in a metal container and immersing it in an ice bath, stirring occasionally.
1/2 cup strong brewed coffee or espresso, chilled
  3. Pour the chilled coffee or espresso into a serving glass. Add the milk of your choice. The amount of milk can be adjusted to your preference for a creamier or lighter latte.
1/2 cup strong brewed coffee or espresso, chilled, 1/2 cup milk (dairy or non-dairy, such as almond, oat, or soy)
  4. Add the prepared banana and spice mixture to the glass with the coffee and milk.
2 tablespoons mashed ripe banana, 1 tablespoon brown sugar, 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract, 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon, pinch ground nutmeg, 1/2 cup milk (dairy or non-dairy, such as almond, oat, or soy), 1/2 cup strong brewed coffee or espresso, chilled
  5. If using a blender, combine all the ingredients (coffee, milk, banana mixture, and ice) and blend until smooth and frothy. If preparing by hand, stir the ingredients in the glass very well until the banana mixture is fully distributed throughout the liquid. You may need to crush some of the banana lumps against the side of the glass. Using a frother can also help to emulsify the mixture.

Notes

Leftover latte can be refrigerated for up to 24 hours in an airtight container. For longer storage, freeze the mixture (without ice or whipped cream) in ice cube trays. Stir refrigerated latte well before serving over fresh ice. Blend frozen cubes with fresh milk to re-create the drink.
