Ingredients

For the Base
  • 1 can refried beans 16 ounce
  • 1 tablespoon taco seasoning
  • 2 tablespoons water
For the Middle Layers
  • 1 jar salsa medium heat, 16 ounce
  • 2 avocados ripe, mashed
  • 1 tablespoon lime juice
  • 1 teaspoon salt or to taste
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 0.25 teaspoon garlic powder
For the Toppings
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 0.5 cup diced tomatoes
  • 0.25 cup sliced black olives canned, drained
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro optional
  • tortilla chips for serving

Method

Instructions
  1. In a small bowl, combine the refried beans, taco seasoning, and water. Stir until well combined and smooth. Spread this mixture evenly into the bottom of a shallow serving dish or pie plate.
  2. In another bowl, mash the avocados with lime juice and salt until smooth. Carefully spread this avocado layer over the refried bean layer.
  3. In a third bowl, combine the sour cream and garlic powder. Stir until well blended. Dollop and gently spread this sour cream mixture over the avocado layer, trying not to disturb the avocado too much.
  4. Spoon the salsa evenly over the sour cream layer.
  5. Sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese over the salsa layer. Top with diced tomatoes, sliced black olives, and chopped cilantro, if using.
  6. Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to allow the flavors to meld before serving. Serve with tortilla chips.

Notes

For a spicier kick, use a spicier salsa or add a layer of pickled jalapeƱos. You can also add a layer of seasoned ground beef or shredded chicken between the beans and salsa for a heartier dip.
