Ingredients

Dough Ingredients
  • 1 cup whole wheat flour Provides complex carbohydrates for sustained energy.
  • 1/2 cup oats (rolled or quick oats) A fantastic source of fiber, aiding digestion and promoting a feeling of fullness.
  • 1/2 cup mashed sweet potato (cooked) Rich in vitamins A and C, antioxidants, and fiber, supporting vision and immune health.
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened, xylitol-free peanut butter Provides healthy fats and protein for energy and a delicious flavor dogs adore. Always ensure it's xylitol-free, as xylitol is toxic to dogs.
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce Adds moisture and natural sweetness, contributing to fiber content.
  • 1 large egg Acts as a binder and provides protein for muscle development and repair.
  • 1 tablespoon ground flaxseed A nutritional boost offering omega-3 fatty acids for skin and coat health and extra fiber.

Equipment

  • - Oven
  • - Baking Sheet
  • - Parchment Paper
  • Medium Mixing Bowl
  • Wire rack

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper for easy cleanup.
  2. In a medium mixing bowl, thoroughly combine the mashed sweet potato, unsweetened peanut butter, unsweetened applesauce, and the large egg until smooth and well incorporated.
1/2 cup mashed sweet potato (cooked), 1/2 cup unsweetened, xylitol-free peanut butter, 1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce, 1 large egg
  3. Gradually add the whole wheat flour, oats, and ground flaxseed to the wet ingredients. Mix everything together until a thick, dough-like consistency forms. It should be easy to handle but not overly sticky.
1/2 cup oats (rolled or quick oats), 1 tablespoon ground flaxseed
  4. Roll the dough into small balls (about 1 inch in diameter). You can also flatten them slightly with a fork for a classic cookie look, or use small cookie cutters for fun shapes.
  5. Place the formed treats onto the prepared baking sheet, leaving a little space between each one. Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until the edges are golden brown and the treats are firm to the touch.
  6. Remove the baking sheet from the oven and let the treats cool completely on a wire rack before offering them to your dog. This is crucial for texture and preventing any burning from hot treats.
