- Open your package of Oreo cookies. Place the cookies in a food processor and pulse until they are finely ground into crumbs. Alternatively, you can place them in a zip-top bag and crush them with a rolling pin until you achieve a fine crumb consistency. You'll need approximately 3 cups of Oreo crumbs.36 cookies Oreo cookies
- In a medium mixing bowl, add the softened cream cheese and the finely crushed Oreo crumbs. Mix thoroughly with a spatula or your hands until the mixture is well combined and forms a cohesive dough-like consistency. Ensure there are no streaks of cream cheese remaining.36 cookies Oreo cookies, 8 ounces cream cheese
- Take small portions of the Oreo mixture (about 1 to 1.5 tablespoons) and roll them between your palms to form small, oval football shapes. Aim for a consistent size for even coating and appealing presentation. Arrange the shaped truffles on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Place the baking sheet with the shaped truffles into the refrigerator for at least 15-20 minutes. This chilling step is crucial as it will firm up the truffles, making them much easier to dip in chocolate without losing their shape.
- While the truffles are chilling, prepare your chocolate coating. Place the semi-sweet chocolate chips in a microwave-safe bowl. Add the vegetable shortening (if using) to help create a smoother, glossier coating. Microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring well after each interval, until the chocolate is completely melted and smooth.2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips, 1 tablespoon vegetable shortening
- Remove the chilled truffles from the refrigerator. Using two forks or a dipping tool, dip each truffle into the melted chocolate, ensuring it is fully coated. Gently tap off any excess chocolate back into the bowl.
- Carefully place the chocolate-coated truffles back onto the parchment-lined baking sheet. You can swirl the excess chocolate off one side with a toothpick to create a more artisanal look if desired.
- Once the chocolate coating has started to set but is not completely hardened, use a piping bag filled with royal icing or melted dark chocolate to draw a "lace" line down the center of each truffle, mimicking the stitching on a football. You can also add vertical lines on either side of the lace for extra detail.Royal icing or melted dark chocolate
- Let the Oreo Football Truffles sit at room temperature or in the refrigerator until the chocolate coating is completely firm. This usually takes about 15-30 minutes, depending on your room temperature.
