Ingredients

  • 12 cups Chex Cereal (rice, corn, or a mix)
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup creamy peanut butter
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/2 cup pink candy melts
  • As needed Valentine's Day themed sprinkles (hearts, jimmies, nonpareils)

Equipment

  • Very large bowl
  • Microwave-safe bowl
  • Spatula or large spoon
  • Large zip-top bag or clean, large bowl with a lid
  • - Baking Sheet
  • - Parchment Paper

Method

  1. Measure out 12 cups of your preferred Chex cereal into a very large bowl. Ensure the bowl is large enough to comfortably mix all the ingredients without spills.
12 cups Chex Cereal (rice, corn, or a mix)
  2. In a microwave-safe bowl, combine the semi-sweet chocolate chips, creamy peanut butter, and unsalted butter. Microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring well after each interval, until the mixture is completely melted and smooth. Be careful not to overheat the chocolate. This usually takes about 1.5 to 2 minutes total.
1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips, 1/2 cup creamy peanut butter, 1/4 cup unsalted butter
  3. Once the chocolate mixture is smooth, stir in the vanilla extract and salt. Mix thoroughly to distribute the flavor evenly.
1 teaspoon vanilla extract, 1/4 teaspoon salt
  4. Pour the melted chocolate mixture over the Chex cereal in the large bowl. Gently stir with a spatula or large spoon until every piece of cereal is evenly coated. Work carefully to avoid crushing the cereal.
12 cups Chex Cereal (rice, corn, or a mix), 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips, 1/2 cup creamy peanut butter, 1/4 cup unsalted butter, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, 1/4 teaspoon salt
  5. In a separate large zip-top bag or a clean, large bowl with a lid, place the 2 cups of powdered sugar. Add the coated cereal mixture to the bag or bowl.
2 cups powdered sugar, 12 cups Chex Cereal (rice, corn, or a mix), 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips, 1/2 cup creamy peanut butter, 1/4 cup unsalted butter, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, 1/4 teaspoon salt
  6. Seal the bag or cover the bowl tightly. Shake the bag vigorously or stir the contents of the bowl until the cereal is completely and evenly coated in powdered sugar. This step is crucial for achieving the signature "puppy chow" texture.
2 cups powdered sugar, 12 cups Chex Cereal (rice, corn, or a mix), 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips, 1/2 cup creamy peanut butter, 1/4 cup unsalted butter, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, 1/4 teaspoon salt
  7. Spread the powdered sugar-coated cereal in a single layer on a large baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Allow it to cool and set for at least 15-20 minutes. This helps prevent the pieces from clumping together.
  8. While the cereal is cooling, place the pink candy melts in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring after each, until fully melted and smooth. You can also melt these in a double boiler if preferred.
    1/2 cup pink candy melts
  9. Once the pink candy melts are smooth, drizzle them over the cooled puppy chow on the baking sheet. Immediately sprinkle with Valentine's Day themed sprinkles before the candy melts set.
As needed Valentine's Day themed sprinkles (hearts, jimmies, nonpareils), 1/2 cup pink candy melts
  10. Allow the drizzled candy melts to set completely. This may take another 15-20 minutes. You can also speed this up by placing the baking sheet in the refrigerator for about 10 minutes.
  11. Once everything has set, gently break apart any large clumps of puppy chow.
