Ingredients

  • 1 cup rolled oats Provides complex carbohydrates for sustained energy and a good source of soluble fiber, aiding digestion.
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened pumpkin puree Rich in fiber and beta-carotene, promoting digestive health and contributing to a shiny coat. Ensure it's plain pumpkin puree, not pie filling.
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened applesauce Adds a touch of natural sweetness and moisture without added sugars, contributing to hydration.
  • 1 tablespoon dog-safe peanut butter Offers a source of protein and healthy fats, making the treats irresistible! Always ensure it's completely free from xylitol, which is toxic to dogs.
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon A flavour enhancer that also offers anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.

Equipment

  • - Oven
  • - Baking Sheet
  • - Parchment Paper
  • Medium Bowl
  • Whisk
  • Wire rack

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the unsweetened pumpkin puree, large egg, and unsweetened applesauce until well combined and smooth.
1/2 cup unsweetened pumpkin puree, 2 tablespoons unsweetened applesauce
  3. Stir in the dog-safe peanut butter (ensure it's xylitol-free) and cinnamon until thoroughly incorporated.
1 tablespoon dog-safe peanut butter, 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  4. Gradually add the rolled oats to the wet mixture, stirring until a thick dough forms. It should be firm enough to handle.
    1 cup rolled oats
  5. Take small portions of the dough (about a tablespoon) and roll them between your hands to form log or stick shapes, approximately 3-4 inches long and about 1/2 inch thick.
  6. Place the formed snack sticks onto the prepared baking sheet, leaving a little space between each one.
  7. Bake for 18-25 minutes, or until the snack sticks are firm to the touch and lightly golden on the edges. The exact time will depend on the thickness of your sticks and your oven.
  8. Remove from the oven and let the snack sticks cool completely on the baking sheet or a wire rack. They will firm up more as they cool.
