- In a large skillet, cook the breakfast sausage over medium heat, breaking it up with a spoon as it cooks, until browned and cooked through. Drain off any excess grease. Add the chopped onion and red bell pepper to the skillet with the sausage. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the vegetables are softened and the onion is translucent, about 5-7 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside.1 pound breakfast sausage (pork or turkey), 1 medium onion, 1 medium red bell pepper
- While the sausage and vegetables are cooking, if you are using fresh bread, lightly toast the bread cubes. This step helps prevent the bread from becoming too mushy in the casserole. You can do this in a toaster oven or a dry skillet over medium heat until lightly golden. Place the bread cubes in a large mixing bowl.4-6 slices bread
- Add the cooked sausage and vegetable mixture to the bowl with the bread cubes. Stir gently to distribute the ingredients evenly.1 pound breakfast sausage (pork or turkey), 1 medium onion, 1 medium red bell pepper, 4-6 slices bread
- In a separate medium bowl, whisk together the 8 large eggs, 1 cup of milk, 1/2 teaspoon of salt, 1/4 teaspoon of black pepper, 1/4 teaspoon of garlic powder, and 1/4 teaspoon of onion powder until well combined and slightly frothy.8 large eggs, 1 cup milk, 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1/4 teaspoon black pepper, 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder, 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
- Pour the egg mixture evenly over the sausage, vegetable, and bread mixture in the large bowl. Gently toss everything together to ensure all the bread cubes are moistened by the egg mixture.8 large eggs, 1 cup milk, 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1/4 teaspoon black pepper, 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder, 1/4 teaspoon onion powder, 1 pound breakfast sausage (pork or turkey), 1 medium onion, 1 medium red bell pepper, 4-6 slices bread
- Lightly grease an 8x8 inch (or similar sized) baking dish with butter. Pour the entire mixture from the bowl into the prepared baking dish, spreading it out evenly. Sprinkle the 1/2 cup of shredded cheddar cheese (or your chosen cheese blend) evenly over the top of the casserole.Butter, 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Cover the baking dish loosely with aluminum foil. Bake for 40 minutes.
- Remove the aluminum foil and continue to bake for another 10-15 minutes, or until the casserole is set in the center and the top is golden brown and bubbly. You can insert a knife into the center to check; it should come out clean.
- Let the Simple Savory Breakfast Casserole rest for 5-10 minutes before serving. This allows it to set up a bit more, making it easier to slice and serve.
