Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup Coconut Oil (Unrefined, Organic) acts as a fantastic moisturizer, packed with fatty acids that help to hydrate and soothe dry, cracked paw pads. It also has natural antibacterial and antifungal properties.
  • 1/4 cup Shea Butter (Unrefined, Organic) incredibly healing and moisturizing. It contains vitamins A and E, which help to repair and protect the skin, making it ideal for rough paw pads.
  • 1 tablespoon Beeswax Pellets (Food Grade) provides a protective barrier on the paw pads. It helps to lock in moisture and shields against harsh elements like hot pavement, ice, and salt.
  • 5-10 drops Lavender Essential Oil (Therapeutic Grade, Dog-Safe Dilution) Crucial Note: Ensure you are using a therapeutic-grade, pure essential oil specifically known to be safe for dogs when diluted. Lavender is known for its calming and soothing properties, and can help reduce minor irritation. ***Always ensure your essential oil is safe for dogs and properly diluted. If unsure, omit this ingredient.***

Equipment

  • Double boiler or heatproof bowl set over a saucepan of simmering water
  • Small heatproof bowl for melting ingredients
  • Saucepan with simmering water
  • Tins or small glass jars for storage

Method

  1. In a double boiler or a heatproof bowl set over a saucepan of simmering water, gently melt the coconut oil and shea butter together. Stir occasionally until fully liquid.
1/2 cup Coconut Oil (Unrefined, Organic), 1/4 cup Shea Butter (Unrefined, Organic)
  2. Once the oils are melted, add the beeswax pellets to the bowl. Continue stirring until the beeswax has completely dissolved into the oil mixture. This usually takes about 5-10 minutes.
1 tablespoon Beeswax Pellets (Food Grade)
  3. Remove the bowl from the heat. If using lavender essential oil, carefully add 5-10 drops. Stir well to ensure it's evenly distributed throughout the mixture. ***Remember to use only dog-safe, therapeutic-grade essential oils and dilute properly. If you have *any* doubts, skip this step.***

  4. Carefully pour the warm liquid mixture into clean, empty salve tins or small glass jars. Allow the balm to cool and solidify completely at room temperature. This can take a few hours.
  5. Once solidified, the balm is ready to use!

Notes

Apply a small pea-sized amount for each paw once a day, or as needed. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Can last up to one year.
