Ingredients

  • 1 cup mashed sweet potato Cooked and mashed until smooth.
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened apple sauce Adds moisture and a touch of natural sweetness.
  • 1/4 cup smooth, unsalted peanut butter Ensure it does NOT contain Xylitol (toxic to dogs).
  • 1 large egg Acts as a binder to hold the cookies together.
  • 1 and 1/2 cups whole wheat flour or oat flour for grain-sensitive dogs
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon optional, but dog-safe

Equipment

  • - Oven
  • - Baking Sheet
  • - Parchment Paper
  • Medium Bowl
  • Rolling Pin
  • Cookie cutters
  • Wire rack

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium bowl, combine the mashed sweet potato, unsweetened apple sauce, smooth unsalted peanut butter, and the large egg. Stir until everything is well incorporated and forms a smooth mixture.
1 cup mashed sweet potato, 1/2 cup unsweetened apple sauce, 1/4 cup smooth, unsalted peanut butter, 1 large egg
  3. Gradually add the whole wheat flour (or oat flour) and cinnamon (if using) to the wet ingredients. Mix until a firm dough forms. If the dough is too sticky, add a little more flour, one tablespoon at a time. If it seems too dry, add a tiny bit more apple sauce.
1 and 1/2 cups whole wheat flour, 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  4. Lightly flour your hands and a clean surface. Roll out the dough to about 1/4-inch thickness. Use your favorite dog-shaped cookie cutters or simply roll small balls and flatten them slightly.
  5. Place the shaped cookies onto the prepared baking sheet, ensuring they have a little space between them. Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden brown and the cookies are firm to the touch.
  6. Remove the baking sheet from the oven and let the cookies cool completely on a wire rack. This is crucial to ensure they are fully cooked through and safe for your dog.

Notes

Ensure peanut butter does not contain Xylitol. Consult a vet if your dog has sensitivities.
