Ingredients

Sweet Potato
  • 1 cup sweet potato Cooked (steamed or baked) and mashed
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce Unsweetened and free of xylitol
  • 1/4 cup plain yogurt unsweetened, unflavored
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup whole wheat flour or oat flour for gluten-sensitive dogs
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon

Equipment

  • Waffle maker
  • Medium Bowl
  • Whisk
  • Wire rack

Method

  1. Preheat your waffle maker: Ensure it's ready to go. If you don't have a waffle maker, you can also bake these as mini muffins or flat biscuits in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 15-20 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
  2. Mash the sweet potato: In a medium bowl, thoroughly mash the cooked sweet potato until it's smooth and free of lumps.
    1 cup sweet potato
  3. Combine wet ingredients: Add the unsweetened applesauce, plain yogurt, and egg to the mashed sweet potato. Whisk everything together until well combined and smooth.
1 cup sweet potato, 1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce, 1/4 cup plain yogurt, 1 egg
  4. Whisk in dry ingredients: Gradually add the whole wheat flour (or oat flour) and cinnamon to the wet mixture. Stir until just combined, being careful not to overmix. The batter should be thick but pourable.
1/2 cup whole wheat flour, 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  5. Cook the waffles: Lightly grease your waffle maker if necessary. Pour about 1/4 cup of batter onto the hot waffle maker for each waffle, depending on the size. Close the lid and cook for 5-7 minutes, or until the waffles are golden brown and cooked through. The inside should be firm and cooked.
  6. Cool completely: Carefully remove the waffles from the waffle maker and let them cool completely on a wire rack before serving.
