Ingredients

  • 2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1/2 cup cooked, mashed sweet potato
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 1/4 cup plain, unsalted peanut butter Ensure it does not contain xylitol, which is toxic to dogs.
  • 1/4 cup grated cheddar cheese Use a mild, low-lactose variety if your dog is sensitive.
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tablespoons water or more, as needed

Equipment

  • - Oven
  • - Baking Sheet
  • - Parchment Paper
  • Large Bowl
  • Rolling Pin
  • Cookie cutters
  • Wire rack

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, thoroughly mix together the mashed sweet potato, unsweetened applesauce, peanut butter, and egg until well combined.
1/2 cup cooked, mashed sweet potato, 1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce, 1/4 cup plain, unsalted peanut butter, 1 egg
  3. Gradually add the whole wheat flour and grated cheddar cheese to the wet mixture. Stir until a stiff dough forms. If the dough is too dry, add water, one tablespoon at a time, until it comes together.
2 cups whole wheat flour, 1/4 cup grated cheddar cheese, 2 tablespoons water
  4. On a lightly floured surface, roll out the dough to about 1/4-inch thickness. Use cookie cutters to shape your treats into bones or other fun shapes.
  5. Place the shaped treats onto the prepared baking sheet. Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until the edges are golden brown and the treats are firm to the touch.
  6. Allow the treats to cool completely on a wire rack before serving them to your dog. This ensures they have a satisfying crunch.

Notes

Store cooled treats in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5-7 days.
For longer storage, wrap individual servings or groups of treats securely in plastic wrap or place them in freezer-safe bags. Frozen treats can last up to 2-3 months.
